An worldwide language for communication with individuals around the world is English. Whether spoken as a first, second, or foreign language, English is one of the most extensively spoken languages in the world. English is taught in Indonesian elementary schools through universities as a subject. The development of oral and written communication skills is the goal of English language courses in Indonesian schools (Depdikbud, 2004:6). This implies that students can also improve their writing, reading, speaking, and listening abilities in the language; nonetheless, reading is now the most crucial ability for English language learners.
According to Komiyama (2009:32), reading is a crucial skill for English language learners in the modern workplace and classroom since it provides access to important information and helps with overall competency development. By reading, students can learn more and enjoy themselves while learning about a wide range of topics. Ostrov (2001:61) asserts that reading is an ongoing process in which you notice and understand new words in relation to what you already know. Grimes (2006:95) further explains that reading is a dynamic, continuous process that involves processing new information and improving comprehension.
In other words, reading is a process of comprehending what we read; when we discover an explanation for a word, we gain new knowledge. Edge (2002:108) says that reading is a fun way to escape into another world. Allow the words to create sounds and images in your mind as you read. It means that when we read and understand what we read, we can describe and feel what the researcher conveys in a text. In conclusion, reading is a process to gain information from a text. Vocabulary is a crucial component of language study, according to Willis (2008:122), and it is primarily learned implicitly through reading. It implies that studying vocabulary is an essential part of picking up a new language. For instance, a person will have a better grasp and comprehension of the language if they are proficient in a significant number of English words. Increasing the size of your vocabulary is one way to improve your reading score, according to Spratt (2020:11). A person’s vocabulary is the collection of words to which they may attribute meanings when reading or listening, according to Hiebert and Kamil (2005:3). To sum up, a person’s vocabulary is the collection of words that they are able to interpret when they read.
